Efficiency AI vs. Opportunity AI: Most Businesses Are Only Playing Half the Game

By David Maples ยท May 21, 2026 ยท 7 min read

Ask most business owners what AI is for and you'll hear some version of "doing the same things faster." Drafting emails quicker. Summarizing meetings. Shaving minutes off paperwork. All real, all worth doing โ€” and all only half the game. On The Buck Stops Here I call this the difference between Efficiency AI and Opportunity AI, and the distinction decides who actually wins with this technology.

Efficiency AI: necessary, but not sufficient

Efficiency AI is using artificial intelligence to compress work you already do: automating quotes, data entry, follow-ups, reporting. It's the right place to start because it's measurable and low-risk โ€” hours saved, errors avoided. If you haven't done this yet, start here; it funds everything else.

But efficiency alone has a ceiling. If all AI does is make yesterday's business slightly cheaper to run, you end up with the same company, just faster โ€” and so does every competitor who bought the same tools.

Opportunity AI: doing what was impossible

Opportunity AI asks a different question: what would we do if certain work cost one-tenth what it does today? Tasks that were never economical suddenly are:

  • Answering every lead instantly โ€” a 24/7 AI agent trained on your knowledge means the 9pm inquiry gets a real answer, not a voicemail. Speed-to-lead is revenue.
  • Personalizing at scale โ€” proposals, onboarding, and follow-ups tailored to each customer, which used to require headcount you couldn't justify.
  • Productizing your expertise โ€” turning what your best people know into a tool or service you can sell. That's how products like EasyPrompter.ai start: expertise, packaged by AI, sold as software.
  • Entering markets that were too expensive to serve โ€” smaller accounts, wider geographies, or service tiers that only pencil out when AI does the heavy lifting.

A warning about hyper-automation

One caution from the same episode: the goal is to empower your team to achieve more, not to squeeze them until they burn out. Use AI to eliminate the tedious work nobody will miss โ€” not to turn every saved hour into more drudgery. Morale is a business asset; the companies winning with AI are giving their people more interesting work, not less humanity.

How to find your opportunity plays

Efficiency wins hide in your processes; opportunity wins hide in your constraints. Make a list of everything you "can't" do: can't respond fast enough, can't serve accounts under a certain size, can't offer that service without three more hires. Then ask which of those constraints assume work is expensive โ€” because that assumption just changed. That exercise is the heart of our AI strategy engagements, and it's where the net-new revenue lives.
